I had purchased the Cal 29 1977 to kick around in and teach on. In getting it ready for summer I had a rigger go up the mast and I was pleased with his report that the mast was removed and new standing rigging was replaced within the last 10 years. Great! Now check the chain plates that had some rust around the bolts. I think owners for get that the plates below deck hold the mast up also! First bolt I turned head sheared off. And again. When I pulled the plate up through the deck I only got 1/2 of it. It had corroded in half. Having another one made and now pulling the rest of them. No way that happened in 10 years....
Photo shows chain plate damage.
