High winds and loose sails....

We had 40Kt winds from the south here a couple of days ago. Due to the layout, this puts quite a swell into the marina. Quite uncomfortable, so I stayed below except for occasional forays to check my lines for chafe.

Suddenly there were loud noises close by, and I saw that the headsail on one of the boats opposite had become completely unfurled! Any attempt to furl it were thwarted by there being absolutely no turns on the furler! I can only guess that the owner had no idea of how the furler worked, and had furled the sail by hand, winding on the furling line at the same time.

This was rather problematic, and the only thing left to do was to take the sail off. Luckily the president of the marina arrived with two staff, and once we had discovered which halyard to free, we got the sail down. Now we had a large sail on a bucking pontoon, with lots of wind trying to put us into the water. The four of us finally managed to get the sail off the pontoon, and into a marina building, without mishap.

Having done my good deed for the day, I made a nice cup of tea...
