The King’s Cup

The King’s Cup

I ventured over to Cowes yesterday to watch the inaugural King’s Cup regatta. Eight teams were invited to take part and each team was represented by a charity that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are patrons of. To help raise awareness of the charities the teams had a celebrity ambassador for the event with Bear Grylls, Dan Snow and John Bishop to name a few.

Each team had a Fast40+ racing yacht at their disposal along with the yacht’s professional crew. Three races were scheduled but two general recalls meant there was only time for two races. It was fantastic to watch from the SailGP grandstand at Egypt Point with big screens to catch the action when they raced further out.

The winner of both races was Bear Grylls (no surprises there!) representing the Tusk charity. Prince William came in joint third and his wife Kate won the wooden spoon for last place. It is hoped they will come back next year for a re-match. Apologies for the fuzzy picture, I was some way back in the crowd!

The SailGP foling 50’s were practising later that afternoon. A incredible sight and so close to shore. If you are thinking of watching these over the weekend just check their website first as there maybe changes to the schedule due to amber weather warnings for Friday and Saturday. Batten down those hatches.
