Sicily and the Straits of Messina

Sicily and the Straits of Messina

An early start took us to see the Teatro Antico di Taormina, the ancient Greco-Roman theatre. We took a bus and then the cable car to the town. There were some incredible views from there towards Mt Etna (somewhat shrouded in clouds today) and we could see Chance Discovery anchored in the Bay a long way below us. After wandering round the amphitheatre and the town with its myriad of small side streets and buying some local produce including 9 jars of honey each from a different flower blossom we went back to the boat to start our trip Northwards through the Straits of Messina. We were fortunate to have 15 - 20 kn of wind from the NW and were able to sail close hauled at speeds of up to 8.5 kn tacking up the straits staying to the West of the North Bound traffic lane. Surprisingly little commerical traffic until the narrows at the Northern tip. Once clear of the straits and as night fell we changed direction and anchored 15 nm West in Milazzo Bay overlooked by the medieval castle.
