The start of Leg 2 !

The start of Leg 2 !

After exiting the Straits of Messina we motored West through the Tyrrenean Sea along the Northern coast of Sicily towards Palermo with the wind right on the nose. Some striped dolphins were spotted way in the distance about 6 nm North of Capo Cefalu in 800 m depth of water and 3 more came bow riding with us just before we anchored in the bay between Marina Arenella and Marina Villa Iglea. Quite unusual so close to shore and in 70 m of water depth. Once again our anchorage was overlooked by a castle. Castello della Zisa - an old moorish palace from the 12th-century. A shower of rain during the night washed the salt from the boat. Two marine biologists and another crew joined the boat for Leg 2 the following day and after a safety briefing we set off to Volcano in the Aeolian Islands. Within the first couple of hours two pods of striped dolphins were spotted but neither came to say hello. We motored on into the night because the wind was now 180 Deg from the day prior and back on our nose. The forecast had shown winds of Force 6/7 from the West with a 3 to 4 m sea and we were hoping for a romping downwind sail under genoa only. Under such conditions we could have made an easy 8 to 9 kn. But it was not to be and Murphy’s Law of the Sea cam into play ! The twinkle of the lights on the various islands are getting bigger as I write this !
