Elba to Pisa and Portovenere

Elba to Pisa and Portovenere

We moved across the bay an anchored off Castligioncello on the West side of Elba to stock up on supplies before setting off for Pisa which was around 65 nm to the NE. We anchored off the marina but the wind slowly increased to 20 - 25 kn and the swell made the anchorage very uncomfortable. Around 01:00 the next day we decided to head to Portovenere near La Spezia (about 40 nm to the North). A rough passage with 3m waves on the beam but Chance Discovery took it all in her stride

Portovenere was totally tranquil and a really beautiful anchorage. Located on the Ligurian coast of Italy in the Province of Las Spezia. It comprises the three villages of Fezzano, Le Grazie and Porto Venere, and the three islands of Palmaria, Tiny and Tinetto (baby Tino !). In 1997 Porto Venere and the villages of Cinqu Terre were designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. We picked up 3 new crew including the videographer / photographer and spent time ashore looking at the sights, stocking up on supplies as well as dealing with some boat jobs and and cleaning and tidying up the boat ready for departure the next day.
