HMS Beagle \u2013 A Potted History<\/h1>\n

The HMS Beagle<\/strong>, a Cherokee-class 10-gun Royal Navy brig-sloop, was built in 1820 at a cost of \u00a37,803, <\/strong>the equivalent of around \u00a31million <\/strong>in today\u2019s money. <\/p>\n

Launched on the River Thames from Woolwich Dockyard, she was not the first ship to bear the name Beagle<\/em>. After five years during which she \u201clay in ordinary\u201d, she docked again at Woolwich for repairs. Her armament was reduced from ten to six cannons, and she was fitted with a mizzen mast, transforming her from a brig into a barque.<\/p>\n

\n

The First Voyage (1826\u20131830)<\/h2>\n

The Beagle\u2019s first voyage in 1826<\/strong>, under Captain Pringle Stokes<\/strong>, was not a particularly successful mission. Setting sail from Plymouth to accompany HMS Adventure<\/em>, tragedy struck when Captain Stokes fell into a deep depression while at Port Famine. He locked himself in his cabin and, in 1828, took his own life, dying ten days later.<\/p>\n

Following this event, the Beagle<\/em> sailed to Montevideo after the Adventure<\/em>, where Rear-Admiral Sir Robert Otway<\/strong> appointed his aide, Flag Lieutenant Robert FitzRoy<\/strong>, as the new commander. FitzRoy proved a capable surveyor, and it was during this expedition that the Beagle Channel<\/strong> was discovered and named after the ship.<\/p>\n

\n

The Second Voyage (1831\u20131836)<\/h2>\n

After extensive repairs and upgrades, the Beagle<\/em> was ready for another mission. In December 1831<\/strong>, she set sail on what was expected to be a two-year journey. On board was a 22-year-old naturalist whose presence the captain had requested to ease the isolation of command, Charles Darwin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This voyage would become a five-year global expedition<\/strong>, lasting until December 1836<\/strong>, and it was the Beagle<\/em>\u2019s second major survey mission.<\/p>\n

The Darwin Correspondence Project<\/strong> offers a fascinating 3D model<\/a> of the HMS Beagle, where you can learn about life on board.<\/p>\n

The Natural History Museum website features some of the notes and specimens that Darwin collected, which formed the basis of his 1839 publication, Journal and Remarks<\/em>, later reprinted under the title \u201cThe Voyage of the Beagle.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

These experiences fuelled Darwin\u2019s revolutionary ideas about evolution by natural selection<\/strong>, which culminated in his 1859 masterpiece, \u201cOn the Origin of Species.\u201d<\/strong> The voyage also contributed to his theory of atoll formation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Beagle<\/em> was beautifully captured in Conrad Martens\u2019<\/strong> watercolours, which are still on display at the National Maritime Museum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Third Voyage (1837\u20131843)<\/h2>\n

Under Commander John Clements Wickham<\/strong>, the Beagle<\/em> set sail again in 1837<\/strong> to survey the Australian coastline<\/strong>. Wickham named Port Darwin<\/strong> after his former shipmate. The nearby settlement of Palmerston was later renamed Darwin<\/strong> in 1911.<\/p>\n

When Wickham resigned due to illness, he was succeeded by Lieutenant John Lort Stokes<\/strong>, who completed the voyage in 1843<\/strong>. During this survey, another geographical feature was named in honour of the vessel, the Beagle Gulf<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

Later Years and Final Fate<\/h2>\n

Refitted as a coastguard watch vessel<\/strong> in 1845<\/strong>, the Beagle<\/em> was used by HM Customs and Excise<\/strong> for anti-smuggling operations and renamed WV-7<\/strong>. However, in 1851 she was removed following a petition from oyster traders, who complained that the vessel obstructed oyster beds.<\/p>\n

She was then renamed Southend W.V. No. 7<\/strong> and ultimately sold for scrap<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Her remains are believed to be scattered around villages near Paglesham Reach<\/strong> on the River Roach<\/strong>, close to Eastend Wharf. Several of her anchors, knee timbers, and pottery fragments have been discovered. It is thought that she was dismantled by local farmers William Murray<\/strong> and Thomas Rainer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Legacy<\/h2>\n

Known affectionately as \u201cDarwin\u2019s ship,\u201d<\/strong> the Beagle<\/em> opened the door to humanity\u2019s understanding of evolution and inspired countless geological and biological discoveries that shaped modern science.<\/p>\n

Today, the vessel is perhaps more appreciated than it was in her own time, a testament supported by international initiatives such as the HMS Beagle Project<\/strong><\/a>, which aim to celebrate and preserve her legacy.<\/p>\n
