{"id":3401,"date":"2014-10-07T12:13:14","date_gmt":"2014-10-07T11:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lovesail.com\/ls-news\/?p=3401"},"modified":"2022-11-07T17:42:55","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T17:42:55","slug":"volvo-ocean-race-2014-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/volvo-ocean-race-2014-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Volvo Ocean Race<\/h2>\n<h4><strong>History <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Volvo Ocean Race is held every 3 or 4 years and has been through many a name change.\u00a0 This sailing race around the world was originally known as the Whitbread Round the World Race and started in 1973. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It is currently known as the Ocean Race.\u00a0 The race consists of 9 to 10 legs with stops at various countries, the stop-offs change for each race with new venues being introduced and old ones being revisited.\u00a0 Typically it starts in October in Europe and finishes back in Europe around 9 months later.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Boats<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The design of boats for the race has also changed over the years.\u00a0 In the 1973 race there were a variety of designs but to create a level playfield one design was introduced in 1993, the Whitbread 60.\u00a0 For the next race in 2021-22 two designs will be allowed.\u00a0 The Volvo Ocean 65 and the IMOCA 60.\u00a0 The IMOCA 60 design is a foiling yacht which should provide great racing action.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teams<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The number of teams entering does vary.\u00a0 Most recently around 6 to 7 teams have taken part.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Ecology<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The race organisers require all yacht to use renewable sources to generate a proportion of the energy used whilst racing.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2021-22 Race<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This race will start in Alicante in October 2021 and will stop off in Cabo Verde, Cape Town, Shenzhen, Auckland, Itajai, Newport, Aarhus, The Hague and finish in Genoa in the summer of 2022.\u00a0 For the first time, the boats will navigate the Java Sea.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Volvo Ocean Race is underway with the crews setting off from Alicante on 4 October 2014. \u00a0The race will see seven teams sail to eleven ports over nine months and clock up some 38,739 nautical miles when they cross the finish line in Gothenburg, Sweden next year.<\/p>\n<p>All teams will be using the Volvo Ocean 65 thus making the race more competitive. \u00a0The race will be won or lost on the skill of the teams, no excuses!<\/p>\n<p>The eleven ports are as follow:<\/p>\n<p>Alicante, Spain;
