{"id":3953,"date":"2015-06-05T22:56:33","date_gmt":"2015-06-05T21:56:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lovesail.com\/ls-news\/?p=3953"},"modified":"2023-05-08T08:53:55","modified_gmt":"2023-05-08T07:53:55","slug":"race-to-alaska","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/race-to-alaska\/","title":{"rendered":"Race to Alaska"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Race to Alaska &#8211; R2AK<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This race is not for the faint-hearted.\u00a0 The Race to Alaska attracts some 120 sailors, rowers, canoers and kayakers from all across the country into 50-odd teams of adventurers.\u00a0 The first one across the finish line in Ketchikan, Alaska wins the $10000 prize.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This way out wacy race has two stages. \u00a0Stage one starts in Port Townsend and is a stand-alone race in its own right. \u00a0Finishing in Victoria BC, competitors can use this 40-mile stage as a qualifier to the main race or just use it to dip their toes in the icy inside passage. \u00a0Stage two starts in Victoria BC and finishes some 710 miles later in Ketchikan, Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>There are only 4 rules competitors have to adhere to:<\/p>\n<p>1) \u00a0Get a Boat Without an Engine &#8211; Size doesn&#8217;t matter!<\/p>\n<p>2) \u00a0Start in Port Townsend &#8211; The races starts on Thursday 4th June at 5 am sharp.<\/p>\n<p>3) \u00a0Travel Unsupported &#8211; No support boats, not even your Mum<\/p>\n<p>4) \u00a0Finish in one of \u00a03 Ways &#8211; Do the short course and finish in Victoria, do the long course and finish in Ketchikan, finish with the sweep boat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s in the spirit of tradition, exploration, and the lawless self-reliance of the gold rush that Race to Alaska was born. R2AK is the first of it&#8217;s kind and North America\u2019s longest human and wind-powered race, and currently the largest cash prize for a race of its kind&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>There will be squalls, killer whales, tidal currents that run upwards of 20 miles an hour, and some of the most stunning scenery on the planet. <a href=\"https:\/\/r2ak.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">R2AK<\/a> is based on simplicity: \u00a0You, a boat, a starting gun, $10,000 if you finish first, \u00a0a set of steak knives if you\u2019re second!<\/p>\n<p><a
