The practice dates back to the 17th century and became one of the most enduring traditions in naval history.<!--more--><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"638\" data-end=\"641\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"643\" data-end=\"674\">The History of Rum Rations<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"676\" data-end=\"849\">In the 17th century, sailors were given a daily drinks ration of one gallon of beer. Beer lasted longer than water on long voyages and helped maintain morale among the crew.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"851\" data-end=\"1211\">Life on board a Royal Navy ship was extremely hard. Living conditions were cramped, work was physically demanding, and discipline was strict. Punishments were common and often harsh. Food shortages frequently occurred, particularly towards the end of long voyages. To prevent desertion, sailors\u2019 already low pay was sometimes withheld for months or even years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1213\" data-end=\"1380\">By 1655, beer had become impractical. It took up valuable storage space and spoiled quickly in warmer climates. As a result, a spirit allowance was introduced instead.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1382\" data-end=\"1554\">Due to the political influence of Caribbean plantation owners at the time, rum became the spirit of choice. From then on, rum became synonymous with sailors and naval life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1556\" data-end=\"1639\">This daily drink allowance became known as the <strong data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"1617\">rum ration<\/strong>, or simply \u201cthe tot\u201d.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"1644\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1680\">How Much Was in a Rum Ration?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1682\" data-end=\"1774\">When the rum ration was introduced in 1655, each sailor received half a pint of rum per day.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1776\" data-end=\"1951\">Before the invention of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiritsanddistilling.com\/dictionary\/acref-9780199311132-e-580\">hydrometer<\/a>, the strength of rum was tested using gunpowder. A small amount of rum was poured onto gunpowder and ignited using a magnifying glass.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1955\" data-end=\"2014\">If the gunpowder ignited, the rum was considered \u201cproof\u201d.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1955\" data-end=\"2014\">If it exploded, the rum was overproof.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1955\" data-end=\"2014\">If it failed to ignite, the rum was underproof.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2111\" data-end=\"2213\">The word \u201cproof\u201d originates from this very practice. Heaven help the purser if the rum was underproof!<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2215\" data-end=\"2218\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2220\" data-end=\"2255\">Dilution and the Birth of Grog<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2257\" data-end=\"2467\">By 1725, the amount of alcohol consumed through rum rations was becoming a problem. Some sailors saved their daily tots and drank them all at once. Drunkenness was punishable by flogging, but it still occurred.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2469\" data-end=\"2566\">Admiral Edward Vernon was tasked with solving the issue. His solution was simple: dilute the rum.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2568\" data-end=\"2786\">The rum ration itself remained, but it had to be mixed with water at a ratio of 1:4 (rum to water). Over time, this ratio changed to 1:3, then 1:2. Eventually, the rum ration itself was reduced to one-eighth of a pint.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2788\" data-end=\"2987\">The watered-down drink became known as <strong data-start=\"2827\" data-end=\"2835\">grog<\/strong>. The name derived from Admiral Vernon\u2019s nickname, \u201cOld Grog\u201d, which came from the grogram coats he wore. Grogram was a fabric woven from silk and wool.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2989\" data-end=\"2992\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2994\" data-end=\"3027\">The Abolition of Rum Rations<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3029\" data-end=\"3093\">The tradition of daily rum rations continued for over 300 years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3095\" data-end=\"3276\">However, by the late 20th century, concerns were raised about safety and efficiency.
