It combines both <strong data-start=\"383\" data-end=\"390\">law, <\/strong>what you <em data-start=\"400\" data-end=\"406\">must<\/em> do, and <strong data-start=\"414\" data-end=\"436\">maritime tradition<\/strong>, which covers the expected standards of behaviour within the seafaring community.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"522\" data-end=\"729\">On a vessel, the most senior position for any flag is reserved for the <strong data-start=\"593\" data-end=\"603\">ensign<\/strong>, flown as close to the <strong data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"636\">stern<\/strong> as possible. It is usually the largest flag on board and indicates the vessel\u2019s nationality.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"731\" data-end=\"1026\">In British maritime law, an ensign must be flown to designate a British vessel, whether military or civilian. The <strong data-start=\"845\" data-end=\"859\">Red Ensign<\/strong> (or \u201cRed Duster\u201d) has represented British civil and merchant shipping since 1707. Only military vessels are permitted to do so, and even then, only under strict rules and conventions.<br data-start=\"1832\" data-end=\"1835\" \/>In the 17th century, King Charles I ordered that the Union Flag be restricted to His Majesty\u2019s ships <em data-start=\"1936\" data-end=\"1974\">\u201cupon pain of Our high displeasure.\u201d<\/em> This decree was issued after merchant mariners falsely flew the flag to avoid paying harbour duties by masquerading as Royal Navy vessels.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2115\" data-end=\"2409\">A UK-registered vessel should therefore fly the national maritime flag, the <strong data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2204\">Red Ensign, <\/strong>unless entitled to wear a special ensign. Displaying any unauthorised flag is a violation of British and international law.<br data-start=\"2328\" data-end=\"2331\" \/>Under the <strong data-start=\"2341\" data-end=\"2366\">Merchant Shipping Act<\/strong>, a UK-flagged vessel must wear her ensign:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2410\" data-end=\"2486\">\n<li data-start=\"2410\" data-end=\"2453\">\n<p data-start=\"2412\" data-end=\"2453\">When entering or leaving a foreign port<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2454\" data-end=\"2486\">\n<p data-start=\"2456\" data-end=\"2486\">When requested (\u201con demand\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2488\" data-end=\"2777\">It is <strong data-start=\"2494\" data-end=\"2509\">recommended<\/strong> that the ensign be worn at all times during daylight, especially when in sight of land or another vessel. In port, tradition dictates that the ensign is <strong data-start=\"2663\" data-end=\"2688\">hoisted at 0800 hours<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2693\" data-end=\"2714\">lowered at sunset<\/strong>, ceremonies known as <em data-start=\"2736\" data-end=\"2747\">\u201ccolours\u201d<\/em> and <em data-start=\"2752\" data-end=\"2762\">\u201csunset\u201d<\/em>, respectively.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2784\" data-end=\"2802\">Courtesy Flags<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2804\" data-end=\"2985\">A <strong data-start=\"2806\" data-end=\"2823\">courtesy flag<\/strong> (or courtesy ensign) is flown by a visiting ship in foreign waters as a token of respect. It is typically a smaller version of the host nation\u2019s maritime flag.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2987\" data-end=\"3246\">Most countries use their <strong data-start=\"3012\" data-end=\"3036\">national flag at sea<\/strong>, which sometimes leads to confusion in UK waters. Foreign visitors occasionally fly a <strong data-start=\"3123\" data-end=\"3137\">Union Jack<\/strong> as a courtesy flag, but this is incorrect. The proper courtesy flag in the UK is always the <strong data-start=\"3229\" data-end=\"3243\">Red Ensign<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3248\" data-end=\"3503\">Although there is no legal requirement to fly a courtesy flag, doing so acknowledges the laws and sovereignty of the host country. Failing to display one, or flying a damaged or faded flag, can cause offence, and in some nations may even result in a fine.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3505\" data-end=\"3547\">Traditionally, the courtesy flag is flown:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3548\" data-end=\"3731\">\n<li data-start=\"3548\" data-end=\"3601\">\n<p data-start=\"3550\" data-end=\"3601\">From the <strong data-start=\"3559\" data-end=\"3575\">foremasthead<\/strong> of multi-masted vessels<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3602\" data-end=\"3678\">\n<p data-start=\"3604\" data-end=\"3678\">From the <strong data-start=\"3613\" data-end=\"3634\">starboard yardarm<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"3638\" data-end=\"3651\">crosstree<\/strong> on single-masted vessels<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3679\" data-end=\"3731\">\n<p data-start=\"3681\" data-end=\"3731\">From the <strong data-start=\"3690\" data-end=\"3703\">jackstaff<\/strong> if the vessel has no mast<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Understanding <strong data-start=\"4141\" data-end=\"4161\">ensign etiquette<\/strong> isn\u2019t just about following rules, it\u2019s about respecting centuries of seafaring tradition.
