{"id":4290,"date":"2017-01-10T22:43:51","date_gmt":"2017-01-10T22:43:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lovesail.com\/ls-news\/?p=4290"},"modified":"2022-08-19T10:55:33","modified_gmt":"2022-08-19T09:55:33","slug":"vendee-globe-2016-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/vendee-globe-2016-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Vendee Globe 2016-2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Vendee Globe 2016-2017.\u00a0 This sailing race is ongoing at the time of writing.\u00a0 Those that are \u2018in the know\u2019 have been glued to the internet.\u00a0 The current race is fast, very exciting and in its closing stages.\u00a0 It has been brilliantly covered by the internet and the Vendee Globe organizers.\u00a0 The author is going to encourage you to get involved and to explain what the Vendee Globe is all about.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Lots of people have asked what is the Vendee Globe 2016-2017?\u00a0 Simply put, the race is one of the toughest sailing endurance races for single-handed sailors.\u00a0 It goes around the world and requires the participants to sail non-stop and without assistance.\u00a0 This is a real feat of seamanship and navigation since the rules prevent helping the skipper with customised weather or routing information.\u00a0 The boats are large racing monohulls &#8211; the Ocean 60 class and the current race has 29 competitors from 10 nations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/vg.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"4294\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/vendee-globe-2016-2017\/vg\/#main\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/vg.jpeg?fit=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"300,168\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"vg\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/vg.jpeg?fit=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4294 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/vg.jpeg?resize=300%2C168\" alt=\"vendee globe 2016-2017\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The race starts at Les Sables d\u2019Olonne in Vendee, France and goes South through the Atlantic.\u00a0 Competitors then turn left below Africa\u2019s tip (the Cape of Good Hope) and travels through the tempestuous Southern Ocean circumnavigating Antarctica whilst remaining South of Australia and New Zealand. \u00a0The participants then round Cape Horn on the Southern Tip of Chile and race back up the Atlantic to the start point.\u00a0 Every race there is a high attrition rate and boats are forced to retire due to the extreme conditions that break equipment and test the participants and their craft to the limit.\u00a0 Boat speeds can routinely exceed 20 knots and needless to say the race soon spreads out.\u00a0 The current distance between first and last is over 9,000 miles.<\/p>\n<h3>Alex Thompson<\/h3>\n<p>Throughout its history the race has been heavily dominated by France.\u00a0 Every winner of the race has been French.\u00a0 The Brits have also been challenging competitors with well-known sailing names Ellen McArthur (2<sup>nd<\/sup> in 2001), Mike Golding (3<sup>rd<\/sup> in 2005), Dee Caffari, and Tony Bullimore amongst others.\u00a0 In this year&#8217;s race and currently in second place we have Alex Thomson.\u00a0 This plucky Brit is sailing in his 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Vendee Globe he came 3<sup>rd<\/sup> in 2013 but did not finish in the preceding two races.\u00a0 The current race is led by Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h who has just crossed the equator and is ahead of Alex by a little over 130 miles at the time of writing.\u00a0 With only 2,500 miles to go as they charge northwards up the Atlantic it&#8217;s close \u2013 very close.<\/p>\n<h3>Foiling Monohulls<\/h3>\n<p>This edition of the race is also the first to feature foiling boats, monohulls equipped with hydrofoils.
