Any sailor posted there would end the watch soaked, cold, and often seasick. Today, to feel <em data-start=\"859\" data-end=\"878\">under the weather<\/em> means to feel unwell.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h3 data-start=\"904\" data-end=\"922\">Squared Away<\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"1130\">On square-rigged ships, sails set properly to catch the wind were said to be <em data-start=\"1000\" data-end=\"1014\">squared away<\/em>. A crew with everything squared away was ready for action. Now it means having everything organised and in order.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h3 data-start=\"1132\" data-end=\"1150\">Loose Cannon<\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"1151\" data-end=\"1438\">Cannons were secured with ropes to keep them steady during battle or rough seas. Even a relatively small six-pounder weighed around half a tonne. If one broke free, it could smash across the deck causing chaos. A <em data-start=\"1364\" data-end=\"1378\">loose cannon<\/em> today is someone unpredictable and potentially dangerous.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h3 data-start=\"1440\" data-end=\"1475\">Shipshape and Bristol Fashion<\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"1476\" data-end=\"1787\">This combines two expressions. <em data-start=\"1507\" data-end=\"1518\">Shipshape<\/em> meant neat and tidy, something every sailor was expected to maintain. <em data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1605\">Bristol fashion<\/em> referred to the English port of Bristol, once famous for high-quality outfitting and chandlery. Together, <em data-start=\"1712\" data-end=\"1743\">shipshape and Bristol fashion<\/em> means tidy, orderly, and of good quality.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h3 data-start=\"1789\" data-end=\"1807\">Son of a Gun<\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"1808\" data-end=\"2066\">In port, crews were sometimes confined to their ships for weeks. Women were unofficially allowed aboard, and children were occasionally born between the guns on the gun deck. If the father was unknown, the child was recorded in the log as a <em data-start=\"2049\" data-end=\"2063\">son of a gun<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h3 data-start=\"2068\" data-end=\"2079\">Aloof<\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"2080\" data-end=\"2323\">Today, <em data-start=\"2087\" data-end=\"2094\">aloof<\/em> means distant or reserved. Its roots are nautical: from the Middle English <em data-start=\"2170\" data-end=\"2176\">loof<\/em> (now <em data-start=\"2182\" data-end=\"2188\">luff<\/em>), meaning the windward side of a ship.
