I\u2019ve never read the book of the same name by Sebastian Junger, nor seen the 2000 film starring George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg, but I had an idea of the plot. What I hadn\u2019t realised was that the story was based on a real storm that caused havoc along the eastern seaboard of Canada and the United States at the end of October and beginning of November 1991.<!--more--><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"826\" data-end=\"829\" \/>\n<h2>The Halloween Storm<\/h2>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The so-called Halloween Storm, or \u201cNo-Name Storm\u201d, later became known as <em>The Perfect Storm<\/em> after a conversation between author Sebastian Junger and Boston meteorologist Robert Case. Case described an extraordinary combination of weather conditions that were almost perfect for producing such a powerful storm.<\/p>\n<p>The storm caused extensive destruction along the eastern coast of the United States, with damage estimated at more than $200 million. Its effects were felt much further afield, from the Canadian Maritimes to the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>So, what made it <em>the<\/em> perfect storm? In short, three major weather influences came together spectacularly.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The Nor&#8217;easter<\/h2>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Nor\u2019easters, storms associated with powerful northeasterly winds, are common from October to April along the eastern seaboard of Canada and the United States. They can bring heavy rain, snow, coastal flooding and even hurricane-force winds.<\/p>\n<p>In late October 1991, an unusually strong high-pressure system developed over eastern North America and southeastern Canada. Meanwhile, a cold front moving through New England helped create a developing low-pressure system off the coast of Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n<p>The enormous difference in pressure between these systems helped generate fierce winds over the North Atlantic. The developing nor\u2019easter was already a formidable storm, but another weather system was about to make matters considerably worse.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1951\" data-end=\"1954\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1956\" data-end=\"1974\">Hurricane Grace<\/h2>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The third ingredient was Hurricane Grace, which had developed near Bermuda and strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than continuing northwest towards the American coastline, Grace was steered eastwards by the much larger developing storm.<\/p>\n<p>On 29 October, Grace weakened and was absorbed into the nor\u2019easter, feeding additional tropical moisture and energy into an already powerful weather system.<\/p>\n<p>By 30 October, the nor\u2019easter had reached its greatest intensity, generating enormous waves and battering exposed stretches of the North American coastline.<\/p>\n<p>But the story didn&#8217;t end there.<\/p>\n<p>In an unusual twist, the storm subsequently moved southwards over the warmer waters of the Gulf Stream. As its structure changed, a new tropical cyclone developed within the weakening system, eventually becoming an unnamed Category 1 hurricane on 1 November.<\/p>\n<p>It was an extraordinary sequence: a powerful nor\u2019easter absorbed the remnants of a hurricane and then developed into a hurricane itself.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3651\" data-end=\"3654\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2569\" data-end=\"2585\">Offshore Fury<\/h2>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Although the storm&#8217;s centre remained largely offshore during its most destructive phase, the seas were exceptionally dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>On 30 October, a buoy off Nova Scotia recorded a wave height of approximately <strong>30.7 metres (101 feet)<\/strong>. Along the coast, enormous surf, strong winds and coastal flooding damaged homes, roads and waterfront properties.<\/p>\n<p>The storm&#8217;s prolonged battering was particularly destructive because powerful waves struck the shoreline over successive high tides.<\/p>\n<p>For anyone caught offshore, conditions were terrifying.<\/p>\n<p>The system eventually moved northeast and reached Nova Scotia as a weakening tropical storm on 2 November 1991, before dissipating.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6530\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/perfectstormtrack.png?resize=300%2C185&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"the real perfect storm\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/perfectstormtrack.png?resize=300%2C185&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/perfectstormtrack.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/perfectstormtrack.png?resize=768%2C475&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/perfectstormtrack.png?resize=485%2C300&amp;ssl=1 485w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3011\" data-end=\"3014\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"3016\" data-end=\"3031\">Loss of Life<\/h2>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">In total, the storm was associated with <strong>13 deaths<\/strong>, including the six crew members of the 72-foot commercial fishing vessel <em>Andrea Gail<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Andrea Gail<\/em> had departed Gloucester, Massachusetts, in September, heading towards the fishing grounds of the North Atlantic in search of swordfish.<\/p>\n<p>Her last reported position, on 28 October, was approximately 180 miles northeast of Sable Island, off Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n<p>The vessel was never seen again.<\/p>\n<p>An emergency beacon from the <em>Andrea Gail<\/em> was subsequently recovered on Sable Island, but the wreck itself was never located. The precise circumstances of her sinking remain unknown.<\/p>\n<p>It was this tragedy that became the central story of Sebastian Junger&#8217;s bestselling 1997 book and the subsequent Hollywood film.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the <em>Andrea Gail<\/em> was not the only vessel in danger.
