Easy Bread Recipes for Boat Galleys<\/h2>\n

Bread making doesn\u2019t have to be complicated, even on a boat. These three easy bread recipes are perfect for a small galley, using simple ingredients and minimal equipment.<\/p>\n

From quick soda bread<\/strong> with no yeast, to flavourful olive rolls<\/strong>, and versatile flatbreads<\/strong>, these recipes are ideal for sailors who want fresh bread without the fuss. Recommended by sailing friends and the Lovesail community, they\u2019re simple, reliable, and delicious.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s something special about the smell of fresh bread drifting through a boat. Whether you\u2019re anchored in a quiet bay or tied up in a marina, these easy recipes make it simple to bake fresh bread on board.<\/p>\n

\n

\u00a0Soda Bread<\/h2>\n

First out of the box and recommended by my great friend and Lovesail member Skippetydoodah is Soda Bread.\u00a0 Quick and easy and no messing around with yeast.<\/p>\n

\"easy<\/p>\n

Ingredients (Serves 4)<\/h2>\n

500g plain flour
\n2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
\n1 tsp salt
\n400ml buttermilk or live yoghurt
\nA dash of milk if necessary
\nAdditional flour for the kneading surface<\/p>\n

Equipment<\/h2>\n

1 x large mixing bowl
\n1 x baking sheet\/tray<\/p>\n

Preparation and Cooking Time<\/h2>\n

15 minutes of preparation time and 45 minutes of cooking time.<\/p>\n

Method<\/h2>\n

Into a mixing bowl sift the flour and bicarbonate of soda, add the salt and make a well in the middle of the mixture.\u00a0 Pour the buttermilk or yoghurt into this well and bring together to form a sticky dough, milk can be added to help with this.\u00a0 Turn the sticky dough out onto a lightly floured smooth surface.\u00a0 Knead lightly into a ball for around a minute, unlike yeasted bread you are not looking for a shiny finish.<\/p>\n

Place the dough on a floured baking tray.\u00a0 You can dust the top with more flour and also mark the top with a cross.\u00a0 Make sure to cut into the dough two-thirds of the way down.\u00a0 Bake in a preheated oven at 200\u00b0 or gas mark 6 for 40-45 minutes.\u00a0 Tap the bottom of the loaf to test if it is cooked.\u00a0 If it sounds hollow it is ready.\u00a0 Soda bread is best eaten as soon as it is cooked…as if you could wait!<\/p>\n

\n

Olive Bread<\/h2>\n

This bread recipe comes from my good friend Yvonne from Culinary Occasions in Cumbria.\u00a0 Many a galley have we shared, Yvonne cooking, me usually washing up!\u00a0 You will need to plan ahead and have yeast and bread flour for this one.<\/p>\n

Ingredients<\/h2>\n

250g bread flour
\n1 tsp yeast
\n1 tsp salt
\n\u00bd tsp sugar
\n1 tbs olive oil
\n150ml warm water
\nOlives
\nRosemary sprig
\nExtra flour for kneading
\nExtra olive oil for greasing<\/p>\n

Equipment<\/h2>\n

1 x large mixing bowl
\n1 x baking sheet\/tray<\/p>\n

Preparation and Cooking Time<\/h2>\n

Preparation takes about 15 minutes plus 45 minutes for proving. Baking time is 10 minutes.<\/p>\n

Method<\/h2>\n

Place the flour, yeast, salt and sugar into the mixing bowl.\u00a0 Tear or chop the olives into the mixture, around 6 to 8 depending on your tastes and mix around.\u00a0 Make a well in the middle of the mixture and add the water and oil.\u00a0 Mix with a fork until sticky then turn out onto a floured surface.\u00a0 Knead the dough until it appears shiny.<\/p>\n

Place the dough back into the bowl, cover with a clean tea towel and place somewhere warm to prove for around 45-60 minutes.\u00a0 When the dough has doubled in size remove from the bowl and divide into 8 small balls.\u00a0 Place on a lined baking tray and brush oil over the top of each roll.<\/p>\n

Cook in a preheated oven at 210\u00ba or gas mark 8 for 10 minutes.<\/p>\n

This bread is perfect warm with a drizzle of olive oil or alongside cheese.<\/p>\n

\n

Flatbread<\/h2>\n

\"simple<\/p>\n

Third on the list for easy bread recipes has to be flatbread.\u00a0 Quick and easy to make with a small list of ingredients this is an ideal bread to make in a small galley.\u00a0 This versatile bread can be used for wraps, dipping and as a base for homemade pizzas.\u00a0 They can also be flavoured with herbs and garlic for a delicious side to any pasta dish.\u00a0 This recipe is from my own stash.<\/p>\n

Ingredients<\/h2>\n

350g self-raising flour
\n350g natural yoghurt
\n1 tsp baking powder
\nExtra flour for dusting<\/p>\n

Preparation and Cooking Time<\/h2>\n

Altogether it should take 40 minutes.<\/p>\n

Equipment<\/h2>\n

1 x mixing bowl
\n1 x skillet\/frying pan<\/p>\n

Method<\/h2>\n

Place all 3 ingredients into the bowl and mix with a fork until combined.\u00a0 Flour a smooth work surface and place the sticky dough on the surface to knead.\u00a0 Like the soda bread, you only have to knead for around a minute.\u00a0 Place the dough back into the bowl, cover with a plate and let it rest for 15-20 minutes.<\/p>\n

Once the dough has rested place it on the floured work surface and divide it into 6 equal pieces.\u00a0 With your hands roll the pieces into balls and then using a rolling pin roll flat into round shapes about 12cm in diameter and 2mm thick.<\/p>\n

With a hot skillet\/frying pan lightly greased, cook each round for a few minutes on each side.<\/p>\n

One serving option is to make garlic butter whilst the bread is resting.\u00a0 Take around 50g of melted butter, crush two to three cloves of garlic into the butter and add any finely chopped herbs of your choice.\u00a0 Once the flatbread has come out of the pan you can brush it with the garlic butter.\u00a0 Delicious.<\/p>\n
