We know very, very little about most of the ocean.\u201d &#8211; <\/span>Gene Feldman<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"464\" data-end=\"691\">The <strong data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"487\">Challenger Deep<\/strong> is the deepest known point on Earth. Located at the southern end of the crescent-shaped <strong data-start=\"576\" data-end=\"594\">Mariana Trench<\/strong> in the western Pacific Ocean, it lies approximately 124 miles east of the <strong data-start=\"669\" data-end=\"688\">Mariana Islands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"693\" data-end=\"696\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"698\" data-end=\"721\">The Mariana Trench<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"723\" data-end=\"856\">The Mariana Trench was formed by a process called <strong data-start=\"773\" data-end=\"787\">subduction, <\/strong>when two tectonic plates meet and one is forced beneath the other.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"858\" data-end=\"1250\">In this case, the <strong data-start=\"876\" data-end=\"893\">Pacific Plate<\/strong>, moving westward, is being forced under the <strong data-start=\"938\" data-end=\"958\">Philippine Plate<\/strong>, which moves more slowly. The western edge of the Pacific Plate contains some of the oldest crust and mantle on Earth, making it heavier and denser. They recorded a new depth of <strong data-start=\"1967\" data-end=\"1984\">5,960 fathoms<\/strong> (10,900 m \/ 35,761 ft). The area was subsequently named <strong data-start=\"2041\" data-end=\"2060\">Challenger Deep<\/strong> in honour of this vessel.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2093\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2095\" data-end=\"2119\">Measuring the Depth<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2121\" data-end=\"2382\">The most recent precise measurement was taken in <strong data-start=\"2170\" data-end=\"2178\">2010<\/strong> by the <strong data-start=\"2186\" data-end=\"2238\">United States Center for Coastal &amp; Ocean Mapping<\/strong>, which recorded a depth of <strong data-start=\"2266\" data-end=\"2283\">10,994 metres<\/strong> (36,070 ft or 6,011 fathoms) below sea level, with an estimated vertical accuracy of \u00b140 metres.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2384\" data-end=\"2539\">To put that into perspective, that\u2019s around <strong data-start=\"2428\" data-end=\"2444\">7 miles deep, <\/strong>deeper than <strong data-start=\"2459\" data-end=\"2476\">Mount Everest<\/strong> is tall (Everest stands at about 5.5 miles above sea level).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2541\" data-end=\"2815\">At this depth, in the <strong data-start=\"2563\" data-end=\"2577\">Hadal zone<\/strong>, the pressure exceeds a staggering <strong data-start=\"2613\" data-end=\"2627\">16,000 psi<\/strong>. For comparison, the atmospheric pressure at sea level in your home is about <strong data-start=\"2705\" data-end=\"2717\">14.7 psi<\/strong>.
