Whilst in the UK we tend to buy cards, flowers, and chocolates for our Valentine, other cultures have their own unique <strong data-start=\"601\" data-end=\"631\">Valentine\u2019s Day traditions<\/strong> to show love and appreciation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"664\" data-end=\"816\">From friendship celebrations to flower codes and romantic festivals, here are some of the most unusual Valentine\u2019s Day traditions from around the world.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"818\" data-end=\"821\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"823\" data-end=\"892\">Valentine\u2019s Day traditions in Finland: A celebration of friendship<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"894\" data-end=\"1056\">My favourite must be Finland. The Finns are wonderfully inclusive, and since the 1980s, February 14th has been known as <strong data-start=\"1014\" data-end=\"1030\">Yst\u00e4v\u00e4np\u00e4iv\u00e4<\/strong>, or <em data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1055\">Day of the Friends<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1058\" data-end=\"1135\">It\u2019s a day dedicated to celebrating friendships with a card and a small gift.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1137\" data-end=\"1337\">Sweethearts can be included, but the focus is on recognising friends, family, work colleagues, and neighbours. With over 60% of the population living alone, this is a lovely way to send a little love.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1339\" data-end=\"1342\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1344\" data-end=\"1402\">Valentine\u2019s Day traditions in Argentina: Sweetness Week<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1404\" data-end=\"1522\">In Argentina, home of the sensual tango, they don\u2019t reserve love for just one day, they celebrate for an entire week.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1524\" data-end=\"1634\"><strong data-start=\"1524\" data-end=\"1542\">Sweetness Week<\/strong> begins on 1st July. During the following seven days, kisses are exchanged for sweet treats.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1636\" data-end=\"1888\">Unsurprisingly, this week-long tradition was the clever creation of the confectionery company Arcor. The Argentine food company launched a \u201cCandy for a Kiss\u201d advertising campaign in 1989, and it was wholeheartedly embraced by the passionate population.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1890\" data-end=\"1948\">During Sweetness Week, candy sales increase by around 20%.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1950\" data-end=\"1953\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1955\" data-end=\"2017\">Valentine\u2019s Day traditions in Taiwan: The language of roses<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2019\" data-end=\"2162\">Taiwanese suitors take flowers very seriously. While giving roses is common worldwide, in Taiwan the number of roses carries a special meaning.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2201\">One red rose signifies <em data-start=\"2189\" data-end=\"2199\">one love<\/em><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2201\">Ninety-nine roses mean <em data-start=\"2227\" data-end=\"2241\">forever love<\/em><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2201\">One hundred and eight roses is a marriage proposal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2300\" data-end=\"2428\">Taiwan is also not content with celebrating love just once a year. They have two romantic occasions: 14th February and 7th July.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2430\" data-end=\"2433\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2435\" data-end=\"2507\">Valentine\u2019s Day traditions in Japan: White Day and returning the gift<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2509\" data-end=\"2590\">In Japan, Valentine\u2019s Day comes with a reciprocal follow-up called <strong data-start=\"2576\" data-end=\"2589\">White Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2592\" data-end=\"2742\">This tradition began in the 1970s. On 14th February, women give chocolates, sometimes <em data-start=\"2679\" data-end=\"2693\">Honmei choco<\/em> (\u201ctrue feeling chocolate\u201d), to their Valentine.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2744\" data-end=\"2829\">One month later, on 14th March, men reciprocate with white chocolates or other gifts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2831\" data-end=\"2993\">Yes, you\u2019ve guessed it: White Day was the idea of the National Confectionery Industry Association, created as a way for men to \u201cpay back\u201d the gifts they received.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2995\" data-end=\"3166\">Sometimes the White Day gift can even be tripled, <strong data-start=\"3046\" data-end=\"3063\">sanbai gaeshi<\/strong>, meaning \u201ctriple the return\u201d! The man gives a present worth three times the value of what he received.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3168\" data-end=\"3171\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"3173\" data-end=\"3230\">Valentine\u2019s Day traditions in China: The Qixi Festival<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3232\" data-end=\"3299\">China has its own festival for lovers called the <strong data-start=\"3281\" data-end=\"3298\">Qixi Festival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3301\" data-end=\"3458\">It takes place in August, on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunisolar calendar, and has been celebrated since the Han Dynasty (206 BC \u2013 220 AD).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3460\" data-end=\"3554\">The festival honours the beautiful mythological love story of the cowherd and the weaver girl.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3556\" data-end=\"3559\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3561\" data-end=\"3587\">The legend behind Qixi<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3589\" data-end=\"3614\">The story goes like this:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3616\" data-end=\"3772\">There was once a poor but kind young cowherd named <strong data-start=\"3667\" data-end=\"3678\">Niulang<\/strong>. He helped an old, sick ox who had been demoted from the god of cattle due to poor behaviour.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3774\" data-end=\"3880\">The grateful ox wanted to repay Niulang by helping him meet <strong data-start=\"3834\" data-end=\"3843\">Zhin\u00fc<\/strong>, a weaver girl he admired from afar.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3882\" data-end=\"4074\">Zhin\u00fc was actually a fairy, the seventh daughter of the Goddess of Heaven and the Jade Emperor. Finding life in heaven dull, she escaped to earth, and when she met Niulang, they fell in love.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4076\" data-end=\"4178\">Unbeknownst to the Goddess of Heaven, they married and lived happily together with their two children.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4180\" data-end=\"4228\">But their secret did not remain hidden for long.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4230\" data-end=\"4358\">When the Goddess discovered her daughter had married a mortal, she was furious. She sent soldiers to bring Zhin\u00fc back to heaven.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4360\" data-end=\"4541\">Heartbroken, Niulang was desperate to reunite with his wife. The ox, seeing the family\u2019s distress, told Niulang to kill him and use his skin as a disguise to gain entry into heaven.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4543\" data-end=\"4636\">Reluctantly, Niulang agreed.
