{"id":7450,"date":"2021-05-13T16:15:13","date_gmt":"2021-05-13T15:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/?p=7450"},"modified":"2021-11-04T10:37:16","modified_gmt":"2021-11-04T10:37:16","slug":"gardening-on-a-boat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/gardening-on-a-boat\/","title":{"rendered":"Gardening on a Boat"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What to Consider Before You Start.<\/h2>\n<p>Gardening and boat are not two words you expect to see together, but with many sailors leaving the rat race behind and choosing to live aboard, self-sufficiency is the buzzword for this community.<!--more-->\u00a0 Whilst it may not be possible to be totally self-sufficient in food living on a boat, with a little planning, patience and persistence it is possible to grow some fresh vegetables and salad crops to add to your diet.\u00a0 Here are some tips and ideas to get you started.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Desire to Garden<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This might sound like an obvious point but even gardening on a small scale can be onerous.\u00a0 Living on a boat comes with many chores and jobs already without the added responsibility of nurturing plants in an often hostile environment.\u00a0 Make sure you want to add this to your list.\u00a0 Gardening can be very therapeutic but only if you enjoy it!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enemies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unlike gardening on terra firma, you have additional enemies that will try and scupper your growing efforts.\u00a0 First there is, of course, the wind.\u00a0 Whilst as sailors we are often pleased to have a stiff breeze, particular plants might not relish it.\u00a0 Low-growing crops or dwarf varieties may do better.\u00a0 Salty air\/spray can be another problem.\u00a0 Again some crops will be more tolerant than others.\u00a0 Motion can cause issues, not from a sickness point of view (!) but from containers moving around.\u00a0 See below for some tips on types of containers to use that will stay put and also space saver ideas, a necessity on a boat.\u00a0 Too much sun can damage some of the more delicate plants so shade may need to be found for these.\u00a0 Lastly water.\u00a0 Depending on your set up water supplies may be an issue.\u00a0 At times it is necessary to conserve water for other boat and sailor needs.\u00a0 If you have a water-maker the salinity of the water can be too much for some plants.\u00a0 You would need to test this.\u00a0 Again some crops can tolerate slightly saline water more than others.\u00a0 Here is a handy list of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ifas.ufl.edu\/pinellasco\/2014\/03\/28\/salt-tolerant-vegetable-gardening\/\"><strong>salt-tolerant vegetables<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Containers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So you&#8217;ve decided to give it a go.\u00a0 Think carefully about the type of container you will use.\u00a0 Space will most likely be limited so you will need to plan well.\u00a0 Do you have a sheltered space that you can dedicate to permanently housing the plants or will you need to bring them down below when sailing?<\/p>\n<p>Rectangular containers seem to be the most popular and have a low centre of gravity, thus reducing the issue of tipping over. These could be bought or made to fit a particular space.\u00a0 Old pallets are ideal for a bespoke container if you want to reuse and recycle.\u00a0 You would need to line with some sort of waterproof lining to reduce water loss.\u00a0 Whilst drainage holes would normally be added in a conventional garden setting, this would cause mess on a boat so no drainage holes, lots of fibre instead will help drainage.<\/p>\n<p>Hanging pots is one neat idea and can be made by recycling plastic bottles or cans.\u00a0 You could even try your hand at knotwork and make some macrame planter hangers.\u00a0 A means of securing the containers is also a necessity.\u00a0 Velcro, bungee cords or other cordage could be used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Growing Medium<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The most obvious medium is compost\/soil.\u00a0 If you are lucky you will be docked somewhere where you can buy this.\u00a0 If not some sailors have asked local residents if they would be willing to donate some of their growing medium or soil.<\/p>\n<p>Another option would be to have a hydroponic setup.\u00a0 This would mean less potential mess from soil.\u00a0 If you have a good supply of water then this could be the way to go.\u00a0 A hydroponic system is lighter, cleaner and plants tend to grow better because you can control the nutrients in the water supply.\u00a0 You can also grow them vertically.\u00a0 Microgreens can also be grown hydroponically and would be ideal to grow in a small space.<\/p>\n<p>Sprouting is another alternative and would be great in a small space.\u00a0 You just need a jar or similar container, water and dried beans or seeds to sprout.\u00a0 The dried beans and seeds can be kept for long periods in their dried state before you need to use them for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/galley-guide-sprouting-and-yogurt-making\/\">sprouting<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 You should see results in a few days too.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"7461\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/gardening-on-a-boat\/330-420\/#main\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/330-420.jpg?fit=440%2C440&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"440,440\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"330-420\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/330-420.jpg?fit=440%2C440&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7461\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/330-420.jpg?resize=300%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"sprouting jar\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/330-420.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/330-420.jpg?w=440&amp;ssl=1 440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Water<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whatever growing medium you are using a good water supply is essential.\u00a0 This could be supplied from your storage tanks, a watermaker or rainwater collection.\u00a0 One thing to consider when using a watermaker is that the resulting water can be slightly saline and the wrong pH for your plants.\u00a0 Testing would be needed to guard against this.
