If you haven\u2019t already, check out our first post on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/relaxation-techniques-box-breathing\/\"><strong data-start=\"595\" data-end=\"612\">Box Breathing<\/strong><\/a> to find out more.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"632\" data-end=\"1001\">For our second instalment in the series, I\u2019d like to introduce you to a relaxation technique called <strong data-start=\"732\" data-end=\"765\">Progressive Muscle Relaxation<\/strong>, or <strong data-start=\"770\" data-end=\"777\">PMR<\/strong>. Have you ever noticed your body tense up when you\u2019re feeling stressed? Maybe your shoulders creep up towards your ears or your jaw clenches tighter than Keira Knightley\u2019s on the red carpet. If so, this strategy is for you.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1003\" data-end=\"1203\">Muscle tension is closely linked to stress and anxiety &#8211; and often we don\u2019t even realise we\u2019re doing it. It\u2019s an automatic response that can lead to backache, tension headaches, and general fatigue.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1205\" data-end=\"1313\">In PMR, you intentionally <strong data-start=\"1231\" data-end=\"1255\">tense and then relax<\/strong> muscle groups in sequence. There are two main benefits:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1571\">\n<li data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1409\">\n<p data-start=\"1317\" data-end=\"1409\">You\u2019ll feel physically relaxed and tension-free, making it a great technique before sleep.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1410\" data-end=\"1571\">\n<p data-start=\"1413\" data-end=\"1571\">With consistent practice, you\u2019ll become more aware of tension in your body and better able to release it, training yourself to respond differently to stress.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1576\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"1633\">How to Practise Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR)<\/h3>\n<ol data-start=\"1635\" data-end=\"2049\">\n<li data-start=\"1635\" data-end=\"1788\">\n<p data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1788\"><strong data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1658\">Get comfortable:<\/strong> Sit or lie down somewhere peaceful. Starting with a few rounds of <strong data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"1742\">box breathing<\/strong> can help you settle into the right mindset.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1789\" data-end=\"1907\">\n<p data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1907\"><strong data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1819\">Tense each muscle group<\/strong> listed below for about <strong data-start=\"1843\" data-end=\"1856\">5 seconds<\/strong>, then <strong data-start=\"1863\" data-end=\"1887\">relax for 10 seconds<\/strong> before moving on.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1908\" data-end=\"1995\">\n<p data-start=\"1911\" data-end=\"1995\">Move either from <strong data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"1943\">head to toe<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"1947\" data-end=\"1962\">toe to head<\/strong>, whichever feels more natural.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1996\" data-end=\"2049\">\n<p data-start=\"1999\" data-end=\"2049\"><strong data-start=\"1999\" data-end=\"2035\">Keep breathing slowly and deeply<\/strong> throughout.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"2051\" data-end=\"2066\"><strong data-start=\"2051\" data-end=\"2064\">Sequence:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2067\" data-end=\"2859\">\n<li data-start=\"2067\" data-end=\"2125\">\n<p data-start=\"2069\" data-end=\"2125\"><strong data-start=\"2069\" data-end=\"2082\">Forehead:<\/strong> Raise your eyebrows as high as possible.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2126\" data-end=\"2178\">\n<p data-start=\"2128\" data-end=\"2178\"><strong data-start=\"2128\" data-end=\"2144\">Eyes\/Cheeks:<\/strong> Squeeze your eyes tightly shut.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2179\" data-end=\"2252\">\n<p data-start=\"2181\" data-end=\"2252\"><strong data-start=\"2181\" data-end=\"2195\">Mouth\/Jaw:<\/strong> Open your mouth wide, feeling the stretch in your jaw.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2253\" data-end=\"2334\">\n<p data-start=\"2255\" data-end=\"2334\"><strong data-start=\"2255\" data-end=\"2264\">Neck:<\/strong> (Gently) stretch your neck upward as though looking at the ceiling.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2335\" data-end=\"2395\">\n<p data-start=\"2337\" data-end=\"2395\"><strong data-start=\"2337\" data-end=\"2351\">Shoulders:<\/strong> Lift your shoulders up towards your ears.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2396\" data-end=\"2479\">\n<p data-start=\"2398\" data-end=\"2479\"><strong data-start=\"2398\" data-end=\"2423\">Shoulder blades\/Back:<\/strong> Push your shoulder blades together and chest forward.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2480\" data-end=\"2564\">\n<p data-start=\"2482\" data-end=\"2564\"><strong data-start=\"2482\" data-end=\"2500\">Chest\/Stomach:<\/strong> Take a deep breath in, expanding your stomach like a balloon.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2565\" data-end=\"2648\">\n<p data-start=\"2567\" data-end=\"2648\"><strong data-start=\"2567\" data-end=\"2582\">Arms\/Hands:<\/strong> Make fists and bend your forearms up as if flexing your biceps.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2649\" data-end=\"2675\">\n<p data-start=\"2651\" data-end=\"2675\"><strong data-start=\"2651\" data-end=\"2664\">Buttocks:<\/strong> Squeeze!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2676\" data-end=\"2724\">\n<p data-start=\"2678\" data-end=\"2724\"><strong data-start=\"2678\" data-end=\"2689\">Thighs:<\/strong> Tense your thigh muscles firmly.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2725\" data-end=\"2800\">\n<p data-start=\"2727\" data-end=\"2800\"><strong data-start=\"2727\" data-end=\"2738\">Calves:<\/strong> Tighten your calf muscles by pulling your toes towards you.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2801\" data-end=\"2859\">\n<p data-start=\"2803\" data-end=\"2859\"><strong data-start=\"2803\" data-end=\"2812\">Feet:<\/strong> Curl your toes downward and tense your feet.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2861\" data-end=\"2995\">When finished, notice the feeling of warmth and heaviness that follows.
