The purpose of grounding techniques is to shift your attention away from stressful thoughts and bring your focus back to the <strong data-start=\"662\" data-end=\"680\">present moment<\/strong> \u2014 and it\u2019s very difficult to feel anxious when you\u2019re truly present. This method uses your five senses to gently reconnect you with your surroundings.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"835\" data-end=\"969\">What\u2019s particularly useful about this technique is that you can use it <strong data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"918\">anywhere<\/strong>, and it\u2019s easy to remember. Here\u2019s how to do it:<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"971\" data-end=\"974\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"976\" data-end=\"1021\">How to Practise the 5-4-3-2-1 Technique<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1023\" data-end=\"1189\">Start by taking a few <strong data-start=\"1045\" data-end=\"1061\">deep breaths<\/strong> \u2014 in through your nose and out through your mouth. (If you\u2019d like a refresher, visit our previous post on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lovesail.com\/ls-news\/relaxation-techniques-box-breathing\/\"><strong data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1185\">Box Breathing<\/strong><\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1191\" data-end=\"1339\"><strong data-start=\"1191\" data-end=\"1197\">5:<\/strong> What are <strong data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1234\">five things you can see<\/strong>?<br data-start=\"1235\" data-end=\"1238\" \/>Look for small details \u2014 perhaps the way light reflects off the water, or a pattern on the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1341\" data-end=\"1549\"><strong data-start=\"1341\" data-end=\"1347\">4:<\/strong> What are <strong data-start=\"1357\" data-end=\"1394\">four things you can feel or touch<\/strong>?<br data-start=\"1395\" data-end=\"1398\" \/>Notice the sensation of your clothes, the sun on your skin, or the wind in your hair. Try picking something up and describing its weight and texture.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1551\" data-end=\"1723\"><strong data-start=\"1551\" data-end=\"1557\">3:<\/strong> What are <strong data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1596\">three things you can hear<\/strong>?<br data-start=\"1597\" data-end=\"1600\" \/>Pay attention to sounds your mind has tuned out \u2014 maybe the lapping of waves against the hull or a distant ticking clock.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"1917\"><strong data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"1731\">2:<\/strong> What are <strong data-start=\"1741\" data-end=\"1769\">two things you can smell<\/strong>?<br data-start=\"1770\" data-end=\"1773\" \/>Notice scents in the air such as salt, sunscreen, or fresh coffee.
