Their captain, Jan Maarten, was a seasoned man of faith who carried a small statue of St. Nicholas onboard. The crew believed this relic brought them protection during their voyages.<\/p>\n<h2>The Storm<\/h2>\n<p>As Christmas Eve approached, the St. Nicholas encountered an unrelenting winter storm off the coast of Norway. The waves rose like mountains, and the snow fell so thick it obscured the stars.
