Encircling Antarctica, it flows continuously from west to east through the Southern Ocean and is the only major ocean current to travel completely around the globe.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"826\" data-end=\"1119\">The ACC is also a critical link between the world\u2019s major oceans, connecting the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is driven primarily by the strong westerly winds that dominate the Southern Ocean, particularly the winds of the <strong data-start=\"1060\" data-end=\"1118\">Roaring Forties, Furious Fifties and Screaming Sixties<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"knnl7i\" data-start=\"1121\" data-end=\"1163\">The World\u2019s Most Powerful Ocean Current<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1481\">One of the defining features of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current is its sheer scale. The ACC travels for more than <strong data-start=\"1281\" data-end=\"1320\">20,000 kilometres around Antarctica<\/strong> and transports roughly <strong data-start=\"1344\" data-end=\"1394\">170 million cubic metres of water every second<\/strong> through the Drake Passage, far more than the combined flow of all the world\u2019s rivers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1483\" data-end=\"1704\">Rather than being confined to the surface, the current extends thousands of metres into the ocean. This enormous movement of water makes the ACC one of the most important components of the global ocean circulation system.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"l4zem2\" data-start=\"1706\" data-end=\"1763\">Why Is the Antarctic Circumpolar Current So Important?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"1975\">The ACC plays a pivotal role in regulating the Earth\u2019s climate and oceans. As it circles Antarctica, it helps redistribute <strong data-start=\"1888\" data-end=\"1926\">heat, nutrients, oxygen and carbon<\/strong> between the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1977\" data-end=\"2299\">The Southern Ocean is also an important part of the global carbon cycle. Strong winds and currents bring deep, nutrient-rich water towards the surface, supporting the growth of phytoplankton. These microscopic organisms form the base of much of the Southern Ocean food web and absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2301\" data-end=\"2481\">Some of that carbon ultimately makes its way into the deeper ocean, helping the oceans absorb and store a significant proportion of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"3p749l\" data-start=\"2483\" data-end=\"2525\">The ACC and Antarctica\u2019s Frozen Climate<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2527\" data-end=\"2613\">The Antarctic Circumpolar Current also contributes to Antarctica\u2019s climatic isolation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2615\" data-end=\"2904\">Because the ACC circles the continent without being blocked by another land mass, it helps separate the extremely cold waters surrounding Antarctica from the generally warmer waters farther north. This has helped maintain Antarctica\u2019s exceptionally cold climate over geological timescales.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2906\" data-end=\"3141\">However, the relationship between the ACC and Antarctic ice is complex.
