The crew had already survived violent storms and damage to their ship, but nothing could prepare them for what came next.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1680\" data-end=\"1919\">A massive sperm whale, estimated at 85 feet long, struck the <em data-start=\"1743\" data-end=\"1750\">Essex<\/em> twice with incredible force. The impact shattered the ship\u2019s hull, causing her to sink rapidly.
