About Me:

Able to accept whatever life presents and laugh at myself. I stay happy and keep a positive outlook. Love meeting new people. Healthy eating is high on the agenda. My Discovery 55 is currently based in Montenegro. Trips so far in 2019 have been from Montenegro to the Greek Ionian as far South as Zakinthos and a trip to Croatia taking in a variety of Islands. Already logged > 1,500 nm for this season. Now back in Montenegro and off again to the Greek Ionian in a few days time. A 3,000 nm trip from Montenegro to the UK commences in September. This is via the Ionian, Sicily, Aeolian Islands (Stromboli - if it stops erupting !), Volcano etc), Sardinia, Corsica and the Ligurian Sea to explore this whale and dolphin hotspot (Pelagos Marine Reserve). Onwards to the Balearics and Gibralter, Portugal and Spain and to finish off a crossing of Biscay to the UK. Make dreams a reality - they are today’s answers to tomorrow’s questions

Sailing Experience:

Started sailing by racing a Hobie 18 in Dubai. Solent and cross channel racing. Cruised the Caribbean, Whitsundays, Seychelles, Thailand, Greece, Turkey, Balearics, Croatia and Montenegro via various charter companies. 2016 - 2018 spent cruising the Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean on my own boat. Including working with the Montenegro Dolphin Research Project and Marine Mammals Research Association with a Whale and Dolphin expedition from Montenegro to Turkey. Very well equipped boat with a happy, capable and able sailor.

A motor boat came in last night (perhaps 15 m LOA) whilst we were on shore and dropped anchor between us and an 88 foot Oyster. Unbeknown to myself he tied two stern lines to two of the small buoys cordoning off a swimming area in a bay with a holel. This morning he decided to leave and got himself…

Celebrated passing the 2,000 nm mark since June this year with a 53 nm windward sail in 20 and then increasing to 25 to 30 kn winds and 1.5 to 2.0 m seas. The route was from East Zakinthos to a small bay on the mainland just North of Dragnera. As is her nature Chance Discovery took it in her stride…

Took an early morning dinghy ride (1.4 nm each way) to visit the Loggerhead turtle (Caretta-caretta) nesting beach before the others got there. Apart from the caretaker we had the place to ourselves. A lot more nests than when I visited earlier in the year (around 30 this time). Plenty of evidence t…

We were well rewarded today ! Not one sperm whale but three. A male, a female and a calf all together. Not only that but 20 striped dolphins came to play with the whales and us riding our bow wave and leaping all around us and the whales. One actually jumped over the whales. This went on for > 20…

The Hellenic Trench is a 1,100 km long bathymetric feature that runs parallel to the western, southern and south-eastern coasts and islands of Greece. After a quick swim stop at Wreck Bay (Zakinthos) we will go out into the trench and follow the 1,000m counter southwards and then turn to the SW wher…

Took a trip out into the Adriatic to look for dolphins and we were rewarded with an incredible trip. We had a pod of around 15 striped dolphins that decided it was playtime. Full out of the water leaps next to the boat and bow riding at >8 kn. If that was not enough we also had a pod of 9 Risso&#…

Have seen several pods of dolphins in the last week or so. Bottlenose and striped. The pod of 12-15 striped dolphins rode our bow wave at 7.5 kn and turned to look up at us - great video footage. Also saw two turtles. One adult approx 1 m across with his 'family' of small fish hiding under…

That's the official name for the colour of our new Parasailor - now nick-named the "big red sail". 252 m2 (2,712 ft2 in old money) of red passion was actually pretty easy to hoist, gybe and drop. Great fun indeed !

Have seen many Mediterranean shearwaters in Greek waters but never any shearwaters in Croatia. Last week I saw a single shearwater. It looked different to those from Greece but I did not manage a worthwhile photo. Having researched a little I am convinced it was a Scopoli's Shearwater. Very bea…
