Fun Paper Folding Ideas for Life On Board

What is Origami?

Origami is the traditional Japanese art of folding paper into shapes and sculptures. The word comes from ori, meaning folding, and kami, meaning paper.

Origami has been practised in Japan since the 6th century, originally as part of ceremonial traditions. It is also said that origami gifts were exchanged between samurai as good luck tokens, offering protection against future dangers they might encounter.

It wasn’t until the Edo period (1603–1867) that origami became more widely used for leisure and developed into the art form we know today.

In origami, square pieces of paper are typically used, often plain on one side and patterned on the other.

The Health Benefits of Origami

Origami is not only enjoyable, but it also offers several surprising health and wellbeing benefits.

By using our hands, we stimulate important parts of the brain, including tactile, motor, and visual areas. This helps improve:

  • Hand-to-eye coordination

  • Fine motor skills

  • Concentration and focus

Origami is sometimes used therapeutically for people recovering from stroke or brain injuries. It can also stimulate memory, non-verbal thinking, spatial awareness, imagination, and problem-solving skills.

And of course, once you complete an origami challenge, there’s a real sense of pride and satisfaction in the finished creation.

Why Sailing Origami is Perfect for Boat Life

Origami is a pastime that requires no tools, just your hands and a piece of paper. It can be done almost anywhere, by anyone, making it ideal for life afloat.

You don’t even need special origami paper. Any paper will do. I’ve even made a sailboat out of an After Eight wrapper!

Origami can also be a wonderful bonding or team-building activity onboard, whether you’re sailing with family, friends, or crew.

All in all, it’s a gentle, relaxing skill that’s easy to learn and perfect for group interaction, especially when you’re stuck in the doldrums.
