About Me:

I grew up a ten minute walk from the port of Hamburg, Germany. My relatives in the US lived along Lake Erie. After some visits to ports along the East Coast from Savanah to the Chesapeake Bay and the West Coast from San Diego to San Francisco, I settled a mile from Lake Michigan and have never looked back.

I’m currently restoring an old Pearson Commander on my property.

I’m here to stay connected with other sailors and maybe spin a yarn or two. That fish is always way bigger and usually way funnier in my tales after a grog or two.

Sailing Experience:

As a child I sailed, rowed, paddled and powered on Lake Erie, the rivers Elbe and Alster, and many other lakes and rivers in Europe and the USA.

All of my sailing experience involves smaller craft - dinghy to 30’ sloop - with small crews (less than 6) or by myself. I have never raced a boat. It’s not something I’m drawn to.

I currently sail a 26 footer out of Chicago.

Sailing Qualifications:

As a youth I learned to sail in camps and I’ve taken a few qualification courses in order to borrow boats. IOW - I’ve covered the ASA fundamentals several times.

I grew up with a foot in the slide rule generation so my navigation skills are old school but current with digital methods (which I love to prove buggy or inaccurate). Apart from how to sail, I have training and experience with first aid, CPR, life saving, navigation, radio communications, hazardous material storage and transport and how to feed a hungry crew.
