- About Me:
I sailed in the Army and crewed on the Royal Artillery yachts. In 1986, when a soldier, a German truck collected me and my Gsx1100. I lost the bike and both legs below the knee.
In those days you were considered really lucky if you could get to your local for a pint. I fought this.
I climbed Faith, Hope, and Charity in North Wales, even before I could really walk. At Hadley Court Army rehab, I became the first double amputee in the Army to run. At the first English amputee games, I won seven medals breaking several records. I also became the first British double amputee to run a mile.
I eventually No. 2 amputee climber in the world, climbs including Half Dome in the USA, before old age set in. In 1993 I climbed Mt Blanc, since then I've done many amputee first ascents around the world.
I rediscovered sailing with BLESMA, the limbless veterans, and found I could compete on almost equal terms with able-bodied and completed an RYA YM course. I bought my own boat, a McGregor 26x and sailed single handed to Gibraltar and back, I skipped a Sun Sail 36' in the Little Briton cup coming 1st in class and 3rd overall out of 210 yachts. I worked all over the world for some years, mostly Africa but I was on Montserrat when the volcano went off.
I returned to the UK sold the 26x, and started sailing, skiing and climbing though BLESMA. We sail in the Ionian Islands and do the end of season regatta; I have a second out of 176 in class 2, a 9th out of 64 in 6-7 wind in class 2. And in 2018 I came 10 out of 82 in class 1.
I'm very lucky with my pensions that I can afford my own yacht. I have bought a 2003 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 43 DS in Preveza Greece.
Last year I walked the Pennine way and year before climber Mt Elbert in USA
In April I will set off for 8-10 year adventure around the world. I am making the yacht available to all NATO and Australia and NZ Veterans and their families, everyone really, to come on sailing holidays on Tigger.
- Sailing Experience:
I have logged about 43k but stopped logging more than ten years ago, so have sailed over 50k nm I guess. Mostly from UK or in the Med. But I used to sail out of Vancover and have sailed from there to Alaska several times and around the Vancover Island four times.
