About Me:

Greetings .. yea I am a bit older but Jan 2020 did a 2 handed Atlantic crossing. But there is a bit more to the old guy. Exwife got me into the outdoors a bit and when living in Southern Virginia began backpacking and then white water canoeing. Ended up taking a 2 week white water canoe trip in Northern Canada and ended up at James Bay. Just the 2 of us.
Then took a job in Idaho and joined Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue and wow did i learn from the best. Became rescue qualified and backcountry emt. Started climbing bigger peaks and eventually to Mexico to climb a couple of volcanoes reaching just under 18k ft. Last climb was a 3 man climb of Rainer and then knew i had to quit as could not stay in shape as work got in the way. Moved back to the east coast and worked with a search and rescue group there teaching climbing, navigation, high angle rock rescue and wilderness outdoor stuff.
From there the sailing thing began in December 2000 with ASA courses in Clear Lake Texas then more in Punta Gorda Florida. In 2003 i bought SoulMates, a brand new 40' Jeanneau DS40 and well 14 years on board and underway sailing to 58 different countries ..West and East Carib, 6 summers in the Med and 1 summer in the Black Sea. 2 Atlantic crossings. .Not a great sailor but I get there safely .. -- currently sitting Port Louis Grenada waiting out hurricane season -- and just got PADI certified so enjoying the diving .. am a bit of a weather geek ..had several articles published in Lats and Atts on the Black Sea, searching for Zorba, SE Turkey and soon Morocco - as you can guess i do like off the beaten path - question to myself is where next? Want to help me plan that? Let's talk. question for you -- what is the most important thing about sailing? It is in the blog but the answer -- when not to go.

Sailing Experience:

Sailed East coast of USA 2 1/2 times, most of the Bahamas twice, Miami to Mexico and hopped country to country down to Colombia then back to Panama - Panama to Jamaica then island hopped to Trinidad - Trinidad to Antigua - 2013 2 handed crossing of Atlantic to Azores (no arc) then on to Portugal - 6 summers in the Med sailing to every country except those that shoot at you -- 2016 sailed entire Black Sea from Istanbul to Russia to Ukraine then down the coast back to Istanbul - wintered 2 years in Tunisia, 3 winters in Turkey and 1 winter in Israel - 2020 sailed back across the Atlantic from Cape Verde Islands to Barbados then St Lucia and down to Grenada where i am now for over 1 year waiting out the virus and hurricane season.

In over the 15 years i have been out i am constantly amazed by the amount of plastic i have seen in the water.  I have posted a few pictures in my pictures -- the first is the plastic bottles of water that was in a market in Turkey for charter boats - my question why?  The second picture i…

In my profile i asked the question what is the most important thing about sailing.  The question is one that was asked of me when i was wintering in Israel.   To stay in Israel for more than 3 months i had to get a visa for myself as well as a boat inspection, boat numbers, an inspect…
