About Me:

I love sailing and the sea and when I can't be there, anywhere outside is better than inside! I often sail alone but would much prefer to share the joys (and miseries!) with someone special.

Sailing Experience:

I started sailing at the age of 7, racing a Mirror Dinghy with my dad every Saturday afternoon in Durban Bay. As a teenager, it was boardsailing, offshore, Durban. Then, at 18, my dad bought and renovated a 55ft. Swedish Yawl and my ocean sailing days began. I left South Africa in 1990, aboard this boat and sailed all the way to Malta. For a year in Malta, I was the skipper of Shekinah, offering day charters around the islands. After that I got a job as captain on a private sailing boat cruising to Greece and back - and then I left the sea to continue studying in U.K.
In my mid twenties, I got a job as Mate on an 83ft. Jongert sailing from Maine, U.S.A to Antigua in the Carribean. Then I went home to South Africa in 1994, where I worked for 9 months as a Sailing Instructor. Then along came marriage and two children and it was a good 4 years before I sailed again - this time in England. My first boat here was an 18ft sailing boat, salvaged off the beach in Whitstable; then a 23 ft. Virgo Voyager for a summer season in the Solent, before finding a 30ft. Hurley, lying neglected in Hollowshore Boat Yard near Faversham. By now I had three children and the family dream was to live aboard and sail around the world - in the 30ft. Hurley we named Vagabond. I spent two years refitting her and then we set off but it was not to be - mutiny and the break up of my family, put paid to the dream.
I lived on Vagabond with my youngest son for a while, then life picked up again and I sold Vagabond and bought a beautiful Sweden Yacht 38 called Equilibrium, with my brother, which we own to this day and sail mostly in the Solent, with occasional coastal trips further afield.

Sailing Qualifications:

As a Sailing Instructor in Durban, I held the CASA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate (unfortunately not transferrable to the RYA); and the Department of Transport Commercial Skipper's Ticket.
A couple of years ago I got the RYA Yachtmaster Shorebased Certificate and when time allows, I'll go for the full Yachtmaster Qualification.
