- About Me:
Looking for my "equalist" soul-mate to sail away with one day... if he (or maybe she) is out there.
I'm from Sherwood Forest in the UK (Maid Marion, Robin Hood, Sheriff of Nottingham etc). Grew up on a farm in the woods, nowhere near the sea.
Studied at Melbourne uni and Glasgow uni to be a veterinarian - it was my means of escape from the UK (well my mother really, as besides the weather, everything else in the UK is pretty awesome).
My first “job” post vet school was in the Cook Islands where I met circumnavigators - whilst desexing feral dogs and cats for a charity on Rarotonga and Mangaia.
The sailors invited me with them across the rest of the Pacific; however, I declined for several reasons including my charity responsibilities and a job lined-up at an equine hospital in Australia.
But their idea did plant a seed in my brain - that has now turned into an obsession. I will get across the Pacific by sail boat one day, and the Caribbean, and ideally ocean nomad for life.
I live on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of Queensland and enjoy crewing on boats passing though this area, or further afield.
I’ve been studying creative writing, music, community services work, veterinary conservation medicine and psychology - figuring out where my strengths and passions lie.
Realising the need to earn money for said sail boat though, I am about to start a course in Individual Support (aged care, home & community) as there’s plenty of flexible and well-paid work in that field, in this location.
I don’t wish to be a vet anymore - something about domesticated animals doesn’t sit right with me - strange considering I studied for 7 years to be a vet (but then I had no idea what I wanted to “be”, and was given three choices: doctor, dentist or vet - so I picked the one that I thought I could more easily travel with - and it brought me to the “land down under”, which I’m very relieved and grateful for).
I will be saving up for a catamaran to live off Golden Beach, in Pumicestone Passage - where it is free to anchor. And I can take it up to Noosa for school holidays - but crossing the bar there is tricky.
Or the alternative is to buy a monohull and put it at the Mooloolaba or Kawana marinas for ease of access, shopping centres, socialising and music playing with fellow yachties, electricity, water and proximity to my daughter’s school(s) - hmmm... first-world decisions to be made once I have the boat!
From any of those bases (until my daughter flies the nest) there's sailing to be done down to the Gold Coast or New South Wales coast, or up to Lady Elliot Island, Lady Musgrave Island, Fraser Island, the Whitsundays, along the Great Barrier Reef or around the Northern Cape.
Finding a partner who's life can run parallel to mine: on, or close to, the Sunshine Coast for the next 11 ish years would be amazing, until we can "throw off the bowlines" and "sail away from the safe harbour" - permanently.
