As I approached my 50th birthday, I knew I had reached a crossroads. My career in Big Pharma had been lucrative but morally suffocating, a world where profit often outweighed patient care. I had spent years watching the industry bend ethics to fit its financial agenda. My British bluntness made me an unmanageable force in the southern state of North Carolina. My nonconformity didn’t fit their mould. Eventually, my boss found the easiest way to deal with me—to get me fired.
